MED1011M – Independent Project Intentions Form

Which of the words given in the brief document have you selected, and why?

I have chosen to focus on globalisation for my project, as this provided me with the most ideas that I could develop in an interesting way. I also believe that it is a relevant topic in today’s society.

What do you want to point your camera at?

I want to take photos of a person stood outside some of the European and Asian businesses that can be found around the city. They will be reading a newspaper, with a headline referencing negative attitudes towards immigration or race.

Why are you interested in this subject?

I am interested in the articles currently in the news, such as Brexit, and the right wing politics of both the UK Government and the USA Government. More specifically, how these news stories, policies and beliefs would affect families and businesses in the city that have originated from outside the UK.

What do you hope an audience will take from your images?

I would like the audience to see that if some of the extremist beliefs seen in the media today were more common place, there would be a lot less variation of culture in society, and that this would affect everyone, not just those targeted directly.

What areas of research are you considering to help deepen your understanding of the subject you have chosen?

I am going to research into the stories of those who have been affected by prejudice attitudes in the last few years, and the consequences that negative representation in the media have.

What practitioner(s) or visual resources would you consider to have influenced you? This not have to be photographic.

I have looked at Brijesh Patel’s work, who has taken photos of storefronts in London. I also found Vivian Maier, who was an American street photographer in the 70s.

What support or equipment might you need to achieve your goals?

The equipment I will need to achieve this includes a Canon camera, ideally the 700d, with a standard lens. I will also need a volunteer to be in the photo and hold the newspaper.
